mechanical and electrical installations at Farringdon station in London. <\/p>\n    \n\n\n<p>This project is valued at \u00a3200 million. It is part of the Crossrail project, the London rail network, which is <strong>the largest civil engineering project in Europe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The biggest challenge is completing the work in a&nbsp;<strong>densely populated city<\/strong>, immersed in&nbsp;<strong>1,000 years of history<\/strong>,&nbsp;and at&nbsp;<strong>a depth of 40 meters<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Crossrail begins operating it will increase&nbsp;<strong>London\u2019s rail transport capacity by 10%<\/strong>, permitting regeneration of the capital city, helping to secure London\u2019s position as a global financial centre, and&nbsp;<strong>shortening travel times<\/strong>&nbsp;in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the&nbsp;<em>Elizabeth<\/em>&nbsp;line opens, Farringdon Station will be one of the busiest in the United Kingdom and will become the Crossrail central hub.&nbsp;&nbsp; <strong>140 trains and 150,000 people\/hour will use it<\/strong> and it will <strong>connect to three of the five airports in London <\/strong>and the city\u2019s outskirts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our construction subsidiary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ferrovial.com\/en\/business\/construction\/\" class=\"ek-link\">Ferrovial Construction<\/a> has been awarded the Merit Award for its comprehensive approach to health and safety throughout the country (UK). Additionally, the Farringdon team has been awarded the&nbsp;<em>Most Considerate Site<\/em> the last three consecutive years by&nbsp;<a title=\"National Site Awards | ccscheme\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ccscheme.org.uk\/site-registration\/site-awards\/\" target=\"_blank\">Considerate Constructors National Site Awards,<\/a> UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Impressive ceiling work is currently being completed. Ceilings are inclined 20 degrees and built with 425 tons of prefabricated concrete segments. These segments come together to form a diamond pattern, inspired by the nearby community of jewellery retailers,&nbsp;<a title=\"jewellers in Hatton Garden\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hatton-garden.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hatton Gardens<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reuse of demolition materials<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The reuse of inert material, mainly concrete from demolition, is one of the most efficient options from both an environmental and a financial perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In one of the shafts,&nbsp;<strong>74 secant pillars<\/strong>&nbsp;had to be disposed of outside the site (to landfill). Another shaft, however, required filling with concrete to form the ramp for the escalators.
